Irene Urrutia

Irene Xochitl Urrutia is a Mexican/Canadian curator currently based in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.

As a curator and researcher, she is fascinated by the ecological, political, and epistemological possibilities of contemporary art. She considers decentralization, accessibility, and global sensibility essential. Currently, she is particularly interested in media art in its multiple forms, and in the possibility of exploring plant-human relationships in artistic practice.

In 2016, she co-founded Galería Tu Mamá, an independent contemporary art gallery in Mexico City, where she curated and organized exhibitions, workshops, and other events. She also collaborated on shows and events with other Mexico City galleries, and has volunteered at art institutions in Belgium and Greece. Currently, she is a curator for Media Art Friesland, where she mainly works on the Media Art Festival.
